Cowboy Gus
Gus is not your average cowboy. Born with a cleft palate and congenital hypotonia, his early years were full of challenges, including a feeding tube and multiple hospital stays at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. After undergoing surgery to repair his cleft palate, Gus made remarkable progress—though he still experiences low muscle tone and fatigue.
As part of his physical therapy, doctors recommended horseback riding. Gus climbed into the saddle just before his 5th birthday, and something clicked. Horses, rodeo, and the cowboy way of life quickly became his passion.
Now 9 years old, Gus is an active participant in youth rodeo. While he currently competes in unmounted events, his dream is to ride in full rodeo competitions on his very own horse.
To make that dream a reality, Gus launched his own line of granola, along with handmade bookmarks and Christmas ornaments—all to save up for his first rodeo horse.
